The Historic Monument known as “Casa Cartagena and Santa Cruz de Cusco” was acquired in July 2006 by an Italian society. The proposed restoration of the house was carefully studied by the Italian architect Roberto Bertetti (www.robertobertetti.it), who was appointed by the society to restore the ancient splendor of the property, without altering the historical value.
Work began in September 2007, under the close supervision of the National Cultural Institute of Peru, with a slow and Minusio restoration work, keeping intact the original walls of the house and reusing the same materials with which the structure was built before..The mud brick or adobe and stone are the basic elements of the house, typical of the Andes and Cusco houses.
The property has original Inca walls as well as “frescos” from the colonial era, that through a careful restoration work by the School of Fine Arts of Cusco, have been recovered and placed on display. All this has been the basis for declaring Casa Cartagena as "A member of the Cultural Heritage Monument of Peru."
The Architect Roberto Bertetti in collaboration with the study of Interior Design Il Cubo Design & Forniture (www.ilcubo.it) wanted to give a different style to the house and a projection to where the decoration is typical of the area. To that end have been inserted pieces of art by some famous designers seeking to make Casa Cartagena a unique and very interesting place. Among the leading brands used in the decoration we can quote Slide, Kundalini, Desiree, Ciacci, Trend, Frezza, Frauflex, Lamani, Flaminia, Pozzi, Viabizzuno and Kartell. Additionally in the interior have been inserted details of the Peruvian artisan culture, which fuse perfectly with the style of the structure, by exploiting and while respecting the cultural tradition of Peru.
The restoration work was completed in December 2008 and the overall result has been an unmistakable contemporary artwork cleverly inserted in a cultural and historical context as the city of Cuzco, declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 1983. Today Casa Cartagena is an example of a Boutique Hotel that is unique in its style.
